Schindler’s List (Widescreen) $14.96 Based on a true story, Steven Spielberg’s Schindler’s List stars Liam Neeson as Oskar Schindler, a German businessman in Poland who sees an opportunity to make money from the Nazis’ rise to power. He starts a company to make cookware and utensils, using flattery and bribes to win military contracts, and brings in accountant and financier Itzhak Stern (Ben Kingsley) to help run the factory. By staffing his plant with Jews who’ve been herded into Krakow’s ghetto by Nazi troops, Schindler has a dependable unpaid labor force. For Stern, a job in a war-related plant could mean survival for himself and the other Jews working for Schindler. However, in 1942, all of Krakow’s Jews are assigned to the Plaszow Forced Labor Camp, overseen by Commandant Amon Goeth (Ralph Fiennes), an embittered alcoholic who occasionally shoots prisoners from his balcony. Schindler arranges to continue using Polish Jews in his plant, but, as he sees what is happening to his employees, he begins to develop a conscience. He realizes that his factory (now refitted to manufacture ammunition) is the only thing preventing his staff from being shipped to the death camps. Soon Schindler demands more workers and starts bribing Nazi leaders to keep Jews on his employee lists and out of the camps. Wild in the Streets / Gas-s-s-s (Midnite Movies Double Feature) $12.73 MGM Home Entertainment have been doing a great job bringing the American International Pictures library to DVD with their Midnight Movies series, and this release is one of their more inspired double bills, pairing up two classic youth culture flicks on one two-sided disc. Wild in the Streets has been given a letterboxed transfer in the widescreen aspect ratio of 1.85:1, which has also been enhanced for anamorphic play on 16 x 9 monitors; the image is bold and colorful, and the widescreen image is far roomier than on the washed-out VHS edition. The audio has been mastered in Dolby Digital Mono and sounds fine, if not remarkable. The dialogue is in English, with optional subtitles in English, French, and Spanish. Gas-s-s-s has been mastered in the same ratio and format, and while the film has never been available on home video before, this transfer looks a lot cleaner and more colorful than the print that popped up on pay cable in the ’90s. The audio is also in Dolby Digital Mono, and viewers can choose between the original English track and a dubbed version in Spanish, while optional English, French, and Spanish subtitles are on board. The only bonus item included for either title is each film’s original trailer, which seems a bit of a lost opportunity – it would have been especially nice to have director Roger Corman talk about AIP’s pre-release editing of Gas-s-s-s on a commentary track, which made a loosely plotted film seem all the more disjointed, and there has to be some great stories left to be told about the making of Wild in the Streets. But this DVD makes these movies available at a bargain price while looking better than they have since their original release, and any devotee of oddball cinema should put this disc on their shopping list. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi |

Video Action Sports (VAS) Hit List $29.95 “The Hit List” the new film from the award-winning crew at Matchstick Productions is scheduled for worldwide release in Whistler British Columbia on September 15, 2005 on top of Whistler mountain at the Round House. Featuring the best skiers in the world, the film stars; Shane McConkey, Mark Abma, Ingrid Backstrom, Hugo Harrisson, Mike Douglas, Sarah Burke and many more. “With the incredible winter this year, the footage that resulted is amazing”, said director Steve Winter. “This year we captured it all, powder, park, cliffs, and jumps all set in the most beautiful locations in the World. We couldn’t be more excited about our new release.” Matchstick Productions is offering two ski movies for the price of one this year. On the DVD, the viewer will have the option of viewing the theatrical release that you can see on tour, plus there will be another section devoted entirely to the skiers. Each skier will individually edit their part, that way the viewer can see all the shots the skier worked on over the year, edited in his or her own unique style. So in reality, buying the DVD will be like buying two movies for the price of one. The theatrical version of “Hit List” will be more location based, answering the most frequently asked ski movie question, “Where’s that?” A big part of skiing is the discovery of places and Matchstick Productions is excited to share their exploration of the globe. Red Bull energy drink and Matchstick Productions teamed up and chartered a 110-foot research vessel decked out with a private helicopter and travel up the coast of British Columbia in search of first descents. The results are mind-blowing! The trip included World Cup skier Daron Rahlves, “Skier of the Year” Mark Abma, and big mountain guru Chris Davenport. The zone they discovered was epic and so is the footage that was produced. |
