A Companion to Arthurian Literature $219.95 This Companion offers a chronological sweep of the canon of Arthurian literature – from its earliest beginnings to the contemporary manifestations of Arthur in film and electronic media. Leading scholars review Arthurian legends and their transformations, language-to-language, text-to-film, and medieval-to-modern adaptations are analyzed, and key concepts such as “empire”, “romance” and “chivalry” are explored. Beginning with the historical Arthur and his Celtic origins, this volume chronicles the transmission of the legend throughout Britain and Europe. Arthurian legends within the medieval and Victorian literary movements and the iconography of Arthurian themes in art are surveyed, and the symbolic role of Arthur in modernist literature ushers in the twentieth century, while the feminist approach of Marion Zimmer Bradley’s Mists of Avalon initiates a genre of fantasy fiction based on a richly conceived Arthurian world. Finally, the Companion highlights the rebirth and legacy of the Arthurian legend in contemporary films and computer games. Part of Blackwell’s popular Companions to Literature and Culture series, this expansive volume enables a fundamental understanding of Arthurian literature and leaves no doubt as to why it is still important today. |

Affliction $1.99 Wade Whitehouse is an improbable protagonist for a tragedy. A well-digger and policeman in a bleak New Hampshire town, he is a former high-school star gone to beer fat, a loner with a mean streak. It is a mark of Russell Banks' artistry and understanding that Wade comes to loom in one's mind as a blue-collar American Everyman afflicted by the dark secret of the macho tradition. Told by his articulate, equally scarred younger brother, Wade's story becomes as spellbinding and inexorable as a fuse burning its way to the dynamite.Author Biography: Russell Banks was raised in New Hampshire and eastern Massachusetts. The eldest of four children, he grew up in a working-class environment, which has played a major role in his writing. Mr. Banks (who was the first in his family to go to college) attended Colgate University for less than a semester, and later graduated Phi Beta Kappa from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Before he could support himself as a writer, he tried his hand at plumbing, and as a shoe salesman and window trimmer. More recently, he has taught at a number of colleges and universities, including Columbia University, Sarah Lawrence, University of New Hampshire, New England College, New York University and Princeton University. A prolific writer of fiction, his titles include Searching for Survivors, Family Life, Hamilton Stark, The New World, The Book of Jamaica, Trailerpark, The Relation of My Imprisonment, Continental Drift, Success Stories, Affliction, The Sweet Hereafter, Rule of the Bone, and Cloudsplitter. He has also contributed poems, stories and essays to The Boston Globe Magazine, Vanity Fair, The New York Times Book Review, Esquire, Harper’s, and many other publications. His works have been widely translated and published in Europe and Asia. Two of his novels have been adapted for feature-length films, The Sweet Hereafter (directed by Atom Goyan, winner of |

American Independent Cinema $14.97 “A substantial and insightful examination of the infrastructure of independent American cinema. . . . A true advance on previous studies.”-Warren Buckland, editor of The New Review of Film and Television Studies From the prestige films of Cagney Productions to recent, ultra-low budget cult hits, such as Clerks and The Blair Witch Project, American independent cinema has produced some of the most distinctive films ever made. This comprehensive introduction draws on key films, filmmakers, and film companies from the early twentieth century to the present to examine the factors that shaped this vital and evolving mode of filmmaking.Specifically, it explores the complex and dynamic relations between independent and mainstream Hollywood cinema, showing how institutional, industrial, and economic changes in the latter have shaped and informed the former.Ordered chronologically, the book begins with Independent Filmmaking in the Studio Era (examining both top-rank and low-end film production), moves to the 1950s and 1960s (discussing both the adoption of independent filmmaking as the main method of production as well as exploitation filmmaking), and finishes with contemporary American independent cinema (exploring areas such as the New Hollywood, the rise of mini-major and major independent companies and the institutionalization of independent cinema in the 1990s). Each chapter includes case studies which focus on specific films, filmmakers, and production and distribution companies.Yannis Tzioumakis is a senior lecturer in Screen Studies at Liverpool John Moores University. |

American Splendor: The Life and Times of Harvey Pekar $3.91 The inspiration for the award-winning movie from HBO Films and Fine Line FeaturesAMERICAN SPLENDOR The Life and Times of Harvey Pekar Two classic comic anthologies in one volumeStories by Harvey PekarIntroduction by R. CrumbArt by Kevin Brown, Gregory Budgett, Sean Carroll, Sue Cavey, R. Crumb, Gary Dumm, Val Mayerik, and Gerry ShamrayThe classic collection of the comics that inspired the movie American Splendor, winner of the Grand Jury Prize at the 2003 Sundance Film FestivalAmerican Splendor is the world’s first literary comic book. Cleveland native Harvey Pekar is a true American original. A V.A. hospital file clerk and comic book writer, Harvey chronicles the ordinary and mundane in stories both funny and touching. His dead-on eye for the frustrations and minutiae of the workaday world mix in a delicate balance with his insight into personal relationships. Pekar has been compared to Dreiser, Dostoevsky, and Lenny Bruce. But he is truly more than all of them—he is himself. “Mr. Pekar has . . . proven that comics can address the ambiguities of daily living, that like the finest fiction, they can hold a mirror up to life.”—The New York Times“[Pekar] has a vision that makes daily city life—a ride on the bus, a run-in with a boss, or simply buying bread—dramatic.”—Chicago Sun-Times“Simply stated, American Splendor is the most superb literary endeavor to come off the streets of Cleveland in decades.”—The Plain Dealer (Cleveland)“Mr. Pekar lets all of life flood into his panels: the humdrum and the heroic, the gritty and the grand.”—The New York Times Book Review |

Castaways of the Image Planet: Movies, Show Business, Public Spectacle $0.99 Sixteen years of film criticism from one of America’s leading cultural critics.Castaways of the Image Planet collects sixteen years’ worth of Geoffrey O’Brien’s essays on film and popular culture, most originally published in The New York Review of Books, The New Republic, Film Comment, Filmmaker, and the New York Times. The topics range from the invention of cinema to contemporary F-X aesthetics; from Shakespeare films to “Seinfeld”; from ’30′s screwball comedies to Hong Kong martial-arts movies; from the roots of sexploitation pictures to the televising of Bill Clinton’s grand jury testimony. There is an emphasis on the unpredictable interactions between film as a medium apt for expressing the most private dreams and film as the mass literature of the modern world, subject to all the pressures of financing and marketing. Many of the pieces are profiles of individual directors or actors—Orson Welles, Michael Powell, Ed Wood, Marlon Brando, Alfred Hitchcock, Dana Andrews, The Marx Brothers, Bing Crosby—whose careers are probed to look for the point where private obsession meets public myth-making. Author Biography: Geoffrey O’Brien is the editor-in-chief of the Library of America and a regular contributor to The New York Review of Books. He is a widely published poet, critic, editor, and cultural historian and has been honored with a Whiting Award and fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation and the New York Institute for the Humanities. Che Guevara: A Revolutionary Life $20 The Barnes & Noble Review June 1997 The cover of Jon Lee Anderson’s biography Che Guevara: A Revolutionary Life features a familiar image of the mythic revolutionary. Banners and newspapers across the island of Cuba are trumpeting 1997 as “the year of the 30th anniversary of the death in combat of the heroic guerrilla and his comrades.” And while his popularity continues to swell, Che’s name and face are increasing sales. Five new biographies, six new films, posters, T-shirts, key chains, and Fischer’s Revolution Skis all flaunt his image. But the depth and volume of Jon Lee Anderson’s biography redeem the diminishing effects of such widespread commercialization. Anderson digs well beneath the iconography to reveal Ernesto “Che” Guevara, the man and his immortal revolutionary spirit. The paradigm of revolutionary appearance and behavior, Che Guevara has become better known as an icon of revolution and a champion of the oppressed than for his political activities. Anderson had unprecedented access to Che’s personal archives, Cuban government files formerly sealed to outsiders, and information from the former Soviet Union; he also conducted interviews with scores of Che’s closest friends. His book invites readers to explore the character of a man whose “unshakable faith in his beliefs was made more powerful by his unusual combination of romantic passion and a coldly analytical mind.” Anderson’s careful research takes readers from Che’s Argentinean upbringing through his medical school training, from the evolution of his revolutionary fervor and his relationship with Fidel Castro tohisexecution at age 39 in Bolivia, providing an effortless rendition of a man who would spawn legends. |

Control and Optimization of Multiscale Process Systems $79.95 Interest in the control and optimization of multiscale process systems has been triggered by the need to achieve tight feedback control and optimal operation of complex processes, such as deposition and sputtering of thin films in semiconductor manufacturing, which are characterized by highly coupled macroscopic and microscopic phenomena. Drawing from recent advances in the dynamics and control of distributed parameter processes for which continuum laws are applicable as well as stochastic modeling of phenomena at mesoscopic/microscopic length scales, control and optimization of multiscale process systems has evolved into a very active research area of systems and control engineering. This book—the first of its kind—presents general methods for feedback controller synthesis and optimization of multiscale systems, illustrating their application to thin-film growth, sputtering processes, and catalytic systems of industrial interest. Beginning with an introduction to general issues on control and optimization of multiscale systems and a review of previous work in this area, the book discusses detailed modeling approaches for multiscale processes with emphasis on the theory and implementation of kinetic Monte Carlo simulation, methods for feedback control using kinetic Monte Carlo models, stochastic model construction and parameter estimation, predictive and covariance control using stochastic partial differential equation models, and both steady-state and dynamic optimization algorithms that efficiently address coupled macroscopic and microscopic objectives. Key features of the work: * Demonstrates the advantages of the methods presented for control and optimization through extensive simulations.* Includes new techniques for feedback controller design and optimization of multiscale process systems that are not included in other books.* Illustrates the application of controller design and optimization methods to complex multiscale |

Encyclopedia of Privacy $25.65 Writing in their famous Harvard Law Review article of 1890, Louis Brandeis and Samuel Warren asserted what many have considered one of the most cherished American values: the right to be let alone. Yet in this post-9/11 world, it seems that personal privacy is under siege. New threats to privacy have arisen in the face of competing social, political, and economic demands, rapid technological change, and an intrusive and voyeuristic mass media. Citizens are barraged on a daily basis with stories of corporate data mining, government surveillance programs, identity theft, and computer hacking of personal information. As a result, citizens are becoming increasingly concerned about their personal privacy as well as their privacy rights. This encyclopedia, the first of its kind, comprehensively overviews various aspects of privacy throughout U.S. history, including significant legal cases, events, laws, organizations, individuals, technology, and terms. Face $9.99 On a chill and stormy day, a man slips and plunges over a cliff into an experience that will change his life forever. But Helio Cara’s fall from a cliff is not merely a fall that results in horrific disfigurement. It is a fall from grace. The fabric of his daily existence comes unraveled as jobless, penniless, deserted by lover and friends; he is driven from his home by horrified neighbors. At last, using needle, thread, and razor blades, he determines to reconstruct his own face and to rebuild a place for himself in the world. Faithful To Fenway $15.96 Read the review at MLB.comThe Green Monster. Pesky’s Pole. The Lone Red Seat. Yawkey Way. To baseball fans this list of bizarre phrases evokes only one place: Fenway Park, home of the Boston Red Sox. Built in 1912, Fenway Park is Americas oldest major league ballpark still in use. In Faithful to Fenway, Michael Ian Borer takes us out to Fenway where we sit in cramped wooden seats (often with obstructed views of the playing field), where there is a hand-operated scoreboard and an average attendance of 20,000 fewer fans than most stadiums, and where every game has been sold out since May of 2003. There is no Hard Rock Café (like Toronto's Skydome), no swimming pool (like Arizona's Chase Field), and definitely no sushi (which has become a fan favorite from Baltimore to Seattle). As Borer tells us in this captivating book, Fenway is short on comfort but long on character.Faithful to Fenway investigates the mystique of the ballpark. Borer, who lived in Boston before and after the Red Sox historic 2004 World Series win, draws on interviews with Red Sox players, including Jason Varitek and Carl Yastrzemski, management, including Larry Lucchino and John Henry, groundskeepers, vendors, and scores of fans to uncover what the park means for Boston and the people who revere it. Borer argues that Fenway is nothing less than a national icon, more than worthy of the banner outside the stadium that proclaims, “America's Most Beloved Ballpark”. Certainly as one of New England's greatest landmarks, Fenway captures the hearts and imaginations of a deferential and devoted public. There are T-shirts, bumper stickers, banners, and snow globes that honor the ballpark. Fenway shows up in popular films, novels, television commercials, and in replicated form in people's backyards—and coming in 2008 to Quincy, Massachusetts, is Mini-Fenway Park, a replica stadium built especially for kids.Full of legendary stories, |

Ferris Bueller’s Day Off $16 FERRIS BUELLER’S DAY OFF: POCKET MOVIE GUIDEOne of John Hughes’s most charmingly offbeat films, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off is certainly among the most overtly humorous of his canon of teen movies. It is also one of his best-remembered, its profile challenged only by the acclaimed The Breakfast Club which was released the year beforehand. Contrasting perfectly with the more serious, issue-based tone of Pretty in Pink which immediately preceded it in the same year, Hughes’s wittily incisive dialogue was never as razor-sharp as when delivered by the smart-mouthed high school slacker Ferris Bueller. Today Hughes is just as well known for the scripts he created for hugely popular family films throughout the 1990s, including Chris Columbus’s blockbuster Home Alone (1990), Brian Levant’s Beethoven (1992) and Nick Castle’s Dennis the Menace (1993), written under his pen-name of Edmond Dantès. But even these accomplishments couldn’t compare to the artistic diversity of his output throughout the eighties. Although it is easy to remember Hughes for his meteorically successful teen movies right the way through the including The Breakfast Club (1985) and Ferris Bueller’s Day (1986), he was every bit as adroit in his handling of suburban satires such as Mr Mom (1983) and Uncle Buck (1989), his wry observations of the great American holiday in National Lampoon’s Vacation (1983) and The Great Outdoors (1988), the trials of an exasperated everyman commuter in Planes, Trains and Automobiles (1987), and the expectation of anxious new parents in She’s Having a Baby (1988). Throughout the course of Hughes’s career, there has rarely been a lack of variety in his choice of subject matter. REVIEW OF THE AUTHOR’S BOOK JOHN HUGHES AND EIGHTIES CINEMA ON AMAZONIf like me, you were fortunate enough to live through and grow up during the 80′s and early 90′s, you’ll remember just how rich comedy was back then. Film Adaptation And Its Discontents $25.32 Most books on film adaptation—the relation between films and their literary sources—focus on a series of close one-to-one comparisons between specific films and canonical novels. This volume identifies and investigates a far wider array of problems posed by the process of adaptation. Beginning with an examination of why adaptation study has so often supported the institution of literature rather than fostering the practice of literacy, Thomas Leitch considers how the creators of short silent films attempted to give them the weight of literature, what sorts of fidelity are possible in an adaptation of sacred scripture, what it means for an adaptation to pose as an introduction to, rather than a transcription of, a literary classic, and why and how some films have sought impossibly close fidelity to their sources. After examining the surprisingly divergent fidelity claims made by three different kinds of canonical adaptations, Leitch’s analysis moves beyond literary sources to consider why a small number of adapters have risen to the status of auteurs and how illustrated books, comic strips, video games, and true stories have been adapted to the screen. The range of films studied, from silent Shakespeare to Sherlock Holmes to The Lord of the Rings, is as broad as the problems that come under review. |

Vonnegut’s reaction At the close of the Harper Audiobook edition of Breakfast of Champions , there is brief conversation between Vonnegut and long-time friend and attorney, Donald C. Farber in which the two, among jokes, disparage this loose film adaptation of the book as “painful to watch.” Critical reception Breakfast of Champions received negative reviews, scoring a 25 % on Rotten Tomatoes . Functional Gradient Materials and Surface Layers Prepared by Fine Particles Technology $56 The term ‘functional gradient materials’ was coined in Japan in the 1980s to describe a class of materials having spatially homogenous microstructures and properties. These materials can be used successfully in such applications as electronic devices, optical films, anti-wear and anti-corrosion coatings, thermal barrier coatings and biomaterials. The materials are fabricated with the use of nanoparticles, leading to greatly improved performance. Nanoparticle technology is not straightforward, however, demanding a modification of methods for processing and characterization. This book provides graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, engineers and senior scientists with an in-depth review of aspects of the field, ranging from synthetic methods to a variety of applications. The different approaches to material synthesis are described, giving the reader a better understanding of the complex phenomena involved. Characterization and the evaluation of properties are also discussed. |
