Films Set In Cleveland, Ohio (Study Guide) $14.14 Purchase includes free access to book updates online and a free trial membership in the publisher’s book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Chapters: Stranger Than Paradise, Howard the Duck, Major League, Major League Ii, the Rocker, the Soloist, Welcome to Collinwood, American Splendor, the Fortune Cookie, Light of Day, Antwone Fisher, Against the Ropes, the Oh in Ohio, the Kid From Cleveland. Excerpt: Against the Ropes Against the Ropes is a 2004 drama movie . It was directed by Charles S. Dutton , in his motion-picture directorial debut. It is a fictionalized account of the American boxing manager Jackie Kallen , who was the first woman to become a success in the sport. Luther Shaw most likely represents James Toney , a boxer whom Kallen managed to a title despite a rocky relationship. Against the Ropes grossed less than $6 million in the US and was panned by critics, in part because of the resemblance to nearly all the other boxing movies, such as the Rocky series. As with other such movies, its climax is a bout for the championship. The film was shot primarily in Hamilton, Ontario , Canada at the Copps Coliseum . Plot The film begins with Jackie learning the boxing game with her father and uncle in a small gym when she is just a small girl. Later, she becomes the assistant to a Cleveland boxing promoter. Jackie’s boss then begins doing business with Sam LaRocca, a sports manager, during a middleweight championship fight. After the fight, LaRocca asks Jackie what she thought of the fight. Obviously unimpressed with Jackie’s knowledge of boxing, LaRocca offers her the fight’s loser’s contract for a dollar. She goes to visit the fighter at home, only to find him addicted to drugs. Enter Luther Shaw, a small time hood, based partly on James Toney . Kallen watches in mixed horror and fascination as Shaw pummels the former middleweight champ. She offers to manage him professionally. Although Shaw is at first hesitant, |

Excerpt: Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy is a 2004 American comedy film , directed by Adam McKay and starring Will Ferrell . The film, which was also written by Ferrell and McKay, is a tongue-in-cheek take on the culture of the 1970s, particularly the then-new Action News format. It portrays a San Diego TV station where Ferrell’s title character clashes with his new female counterpart (Christina Applegate ). This film is number 100 on Bravo ‘s 100 funniest movies, and 113 on Empire’s 500 Greatest Movies of All Time . The film made $28.4 million in its opening weekend, and $89.3 million worldwide in its total theatrical run. A companion film assembled from outtakes and abandoned subplots, titled Wake Up, Ron Burgundy: The Lost Movie , was released straight-to-DVD in late 2004. In May 2008, it was confirmed that a sequel to Anchorman is in the planning stages. Plot In 1970s San Diego, Ron Burgundy (Will Ferrell ) is the anchorman for KVWN-TV Channel 4 Evening News. He works alongside his friends and news team, lead field reporter and fashion oriented Brian Fantana (Paul Rudd ), sportscaster Champion “Champ” Kind (David Koechner ), and chief meteorologist the mildly retarded Brick Tamland (Steve Carell ). After a successful day of work, the team is notified by their boss, Ed Harken (Fred Willard ), that their station has again maintained its long-held status as the highest-rated news program in town, leading them to throw a wild party . The next day, Ed informs the team that he is has |

10,000 Maniacs $14.14 Purchase includes free access to book updates online and a free trial membership in the publisher’s book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Excerpt: 10,000 Maniacs is a United States-based alternative rock band, which formed in 1981 and continues to be active with various line-ups. The band was formed as Still Life in 1981 in Jamestown, New York, by Dennis Drew (keyboards), Steve Gustafson (bass), Chet Cardinale (drums), Robert Buck (guitar), and Teri Newhouse (Buck’s ex-wife and vocalist). Steve Gustafson invited Natalie Merchant, who was 17 at the time, to do some vocals. John Lombardo who was in a band called The Mills (along with brother guitarist/vocalists Mark Liuzzo and Paul Liuzzo and drummer Mike Young) and used to play occasionally with Still Life, was invited to join permanently on guitar and vocals. Newhouse and Cardinale left the band in July, and Natalie Merchant became the main singer. Various drummers came and left. The band changed its name to Burn Victims and then to 10,000 Maniacs after the low-budget horror movie Two Thousand Maniacs!. They performed as 10,000 Maniacs for the first time on September 7, 1981 – Labor Day, with a line-up of Natalie Merchant, John Lombardo, Robert Buck, Dennis Drew, Steve Gustafson, and Tim Edborg on drums. Tim Edborg left and Bob “Bob O Matic” Wachter was on drums for most of the 1981 gigs. Tired of playing cover songs – though oddly enough their first notable American hit was found in covering Cat Stevens hit “Peace Train” – the band started to write their own music, usually with Natalie Merchant handling the lyrics and John Lombardo the music. In February-March 1982, with Jim Foti on drums, the band recorded an EP album called Human Conflict Number Five. More gigs followed in 1982. It was during this time that they lived in Atlanta, Georgia for a short while at the encouragement of friends who said that many gigs were available there. T… More: |

1896 Introductions $21.18 Purchase includes free access to book updates online and a free trial membership in the publisher’s book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Excerpt: The history of cinema in Quebec started on June 27, 1896 when the French Louis Minier inaugurated the first movie projection in North America in a Montreal theatre room. However, it would have to wait until the 1960s before a genuine Quebec cinema industry would emerge. Approximately 620 feature length films have been produced, or partially produced by the Quebec film industry since 1943. Due to language and cultural differences between the predominantly francophone population of Quebec and the predominantly anglophone population of the rest of Canada, Quebec’s film industry is commonly regarded as a distinct entity from its English Canadian counterpart. In addition to participating in Canada’s national Genie Awards, the Quebec film industry also maintains its own awards ceremony, the Jutra Awards. In addition, the popularity of homegrown French language films among Quebec audiences, as opposed to English Canadians’ preference for Hollywood films, means that Quebec films are often more successful at the box office than English Canadian films in fact, the top-grossing Canadian film of the year is often a French language film from Quebec. From the 1896 to the 1960s, the Catholic clergy tried to control what movies Quebecers could see. Two methods were employed: censorship and prohibition of attendance by children under 16. In 1913, the Bureau de censure de vues animées (Office of censorship for motion pictures) began regulating the projection of movies in Quebec. In 1927, the Laurier-Palace theatre burned down, killing many children. The church then almost succeeded at closing down all projection rooms in the province. However, the Parliament of Quebec passed a law preventing only children under 16 from attending movie projections. This law wou… More: |

Chapters: Happy Days, Explorers on the Moon, Dog City, Lilla Jönssonligan På Kollo. Excerpt: Dog City is a television series that was produced by Nelvana Limited and Jim Henson Productions and aired on FOX from 1992 to 1995, and in Canada on Global in 1993, then on Teletoon until 2000. The show contained both animation , done by Nelvana and Fox Kids , and puppetry , done by Jim Henson Productions . The animated portions of the show focused on a canine private detective named Ace Hart. The Muppet portions of the show focused on the interactions between Ace Hart and his animator Eliot Shag (who, like Ace, is a German Shepherd ). Eliot would illustrate the stories while Ace would go traverse through it, occasionally breaking the fourth wall to speak with Eliot about the various troubles with the story. In one episode, Eliot even enters Dog City himself to join Ace in solving a mystery. This would be the first Jim Henson animated series since Muppet Babies and Fraggle Rock: the animated series.A recurring gag was that many of the characters in the cartoon were seemingly based on the residents of Eliot’s apartment building. The bulldog crime-boss Bugsy Vile was inspired by the building’s grouchy bulldog super, Bruno; Ace’s love interest, Rosie, was based on Eliot’s unrequited feelings for his neighbour Colleen, and so on. The Muppet characters were unaware of this; in the first episode Bruno asks Eliot how a loser like him could have created a great character like Bugsy. Eliot replies “Sometimes it’s just staring you in the face”.Later series included segments from other shows Eliot worked on, including skits featuring the main Dog City characters and a superhero series starring the Batman parody Watchdog .Characters Animated Muppets The Movie Dog City was originally a |

1959: The Year Everything Changed $15.95 It was the year of the microchip, the birth-control pill, the space race, and the computer revolution; the rise of Pop art, free jazz, “sick comics,” the New Journalism, and indie films; the emergence of Castro, Malcolm X, and personal superpower diplomacy; the beginnings of Motown, Happenings, and the Generation Gap-all bursting against the backdrop of the Cold War, the fallout-shelter craze, and the first American casualties of the war in Vietnam. It was a year when the shockwaves of the new ripped the seams of daily life, when humanity stepped into the cosmos and commandeered the conception of human life, when the world shrank but the knowledge needed to thrive in it expanded exponentially, when outsiders became insiders, when categories were blurred and taboos trampled, when we crossed into a “new frontier” that offered the twin prospects of infinite possibilities and instant annihilation-a frontier that we continue to explore exactly fifty years later, at an eerily similar turning point. In 1959: The Year Everything Changed, acclaimed Slate columnist Fred Kaplan vividly chronicles this vital, overlooked year that set the world as we know it in motion. Drawing on original research, including untapped archives and interviews with major figures of the time, Kaplan pieces together the vast, untold story of a civilization in flux-and paints vivid portraits of the men and women whose creative energies, ideas, and inventions paved the way for the new era. They include:Norman Mailer, musing on the hipster and the H-bomb while fusing journalism and literature in wildly new, influential ways; Lenny Bruce, remaking stand-up comedy by loosening the language and skewering politics and religion; Miles Davis and Ornette Coleman, shattering the structures of jazz; John Cassavetes, making a new kind of movie, with improvised dialogue, shot in the city streets, outside the Hollywood system; Berry Gordy, the founder of Motown, insinuating black urban |

Excerpt: Dirty Dancing is a 1987 romantic film made in the United States. Written by Eleanor Bergstein and directed by Emile Ardolino, the film features Patrick Swayze, Jennifer Grey, Cynthia Rhodes, and Jerry Orbach. The story is a coming of age drama that documents a teenaged woman’s rebellion against her father by starting a relationship with a dance instructor during a family summer vacation. Almost a third of the film involves dancing scenes choreographed by Kenny Ortega (later famous for High School Musical), and the finale has been described as “the most goosebump-inducing dance scene in movie history”. Originally a low-budget film by a new studio and with no major stars (except Broadway legend Orbach), Dirty Dancing became a massive box office hit. As of 2009, it earned over $214 million worldwide. It was the first film to sell more than a million copies on home video, and the Dirty Dancing soundtrack generated two multi-platinum albums and multiple singles, including “(I’ve Had) The Time of My Life”, which won both the Golden Globe and Academy Award for Best Original Song, and a Grammy Award for best duet. The film spawned a 2004 prequel, Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights, as well as a stage version… |

Excerpt: A Man for All Seasons A Man for All Seasons is a 1988 television movie about Sir Thomas More , directed by and starring Charlton Heston . It is a remake of the 1966 film A Man for All Seasons and is based on the play by Robert Bolt of the same name . A Man for All Seasons was the first made-for-TV film produced on behalf of the TNT television network. The film stars Heston as More, Vanessa Redgrave (who cameoed in the 1966 version) as his wife Alice, Sir John Gielgud as Cardinal Thomas Wolsey , Martin Chamberlain as King Henry VIII , Richard Johnson as the Duke of Norfolk , and Roy Kinnear as the narrator, “The Common Man”, who was cut from the previous film. (The “Common Man’ functions in the manner of a Greek chorus throughout the play, appearing at crucial moments and seeming to comment on the action.) The 1988 film follows the original stage play more literally, runs a half-hour longer than the 1966 film, and could be considered more “stagy” than that earlier film, which not only divided the Common Man into several more realistic characters, but omitted small portions of the play itself. |

Lawrence, Alexander Siddig (then credited as Siddig El-Fadil) as Feisal, Denis Quilley as Lord Curzon and Nicholas Jones as Lord Dyson. The film was produced in 1990, a year after David Lean ‘s 1962 film epic, Lawrence of Arabia, was re-released to theatres.
